My Surroundings / Locality
What can I say..... my house is within the boundaries of the Pisgah National Forest,in a narrow little valley out in the country but it's an easy short drive to town. All around Asheville is beautiful nature. The Blue Ridge Mountains are famous and the drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway affords panoramic views of unimaginably lovely scenery. In the spring and summer it's impossibly green and the Fall foliage is a beautiful blaze of colors. Lots of scenic drives. Rivers, lakes and waterfalls are all around. Fishing is very popular and outfitters/guides rent gear. Smokey Mountain National Park is a one hour drive. It's the most visited national park in the U.S. Just outside the southern entrance to the park (closest to me ) is the town of Cherokee and the Cherokee Indian Reservation. Kids and adults will enjoy the Indian museum, shows, and crafts and demonstrations of Indian culture. Adults will enjoy Harrah's Casino in Cherokee. Hike along the Appalachian trail; visit Mount Mitchell the highest mountain east of the Mississippi River. Within a half hours drive are numerous little mountain towns with the flavor of time gone by mixed with modern savvy. Shop for hand made pottery in the many galleries and potters shops. In the summer attend the free music events featuring local Bluegrass and mountain music bands. Buy fresh local grown fruits and vegetables from farm stands or the official western N.C. farmer's market. The Tennessee border is an hour away so exploring another state is also a possibility. The house is about 45 minutes from the South Carolina border and 5hrs from the coast if you need an ocean fix. Virginia is due north of here and only about 1 1/2 hrs drive. So Candler/Asheville is very well situated for exploring in any direction.
My Hometown
Candler is on the SW border of Asheville. My house is exactly 20 minutes to the heart of downtown Asheville which is a popular vacation spot. President Obama as well as previous presidents have vacationed here. Located on the French Broad River, it's a small city but doesn't look or feel like a city. Downtown is very small and walkable. It's known for its art galleries, local artisans and really good restaurants. The vibe is a mix of laid back atmosphere and sophistication - casual yet cosmopolitan. Numerous small live theaters abound in and close by in delightful little towns which themselves beg to be explored. Asheville boasts its own river arts district with many studios of different mediums. The Blue Ridge Parkway runs through town too which is a national park in and of itself. Drive along its winding mountain road and stop at scenic overlooks, pack a picnic lunch and follow trails which are abundant along the BRP. Hiking, fishing, canoeing, rafting and biking are the popular sports in and around town with places to rent gear. The Biltmore Estate is the crowning jewel of town and definitely worth a visit.
